Building Sonex 982 Sierra X-ray

Bob Meyers' Unofficial Airplane Builders Log

No pictures to post but I have done some work.

I cut the hole in the leading edge for the landing light and mounted the plexiglass lens. I also have been giving the rivets a good inspection.

I probably won't get much work done until next week so no posts are likely until then.

This has been a very fun week. Solid building progress culminating in the finishing of the left wing today.

Here are some pictures I have been looking forward to this posting for quite awhile.

The skinning of the wing has begun. This was a very exciting day.

Hope you like the pictures as much as I did doing the work.

The dreaded deburring is all done, the wing is wired up, the top skin is clecoed back on and the wing is turned upside down for some final interior work.

Enjoy the pictures

With the EAA visit done, I thought I would do some work.

Here are the pictures

Joe L. - the EAA Tech Counselor for chapter 153 - stopped by to take a look at my project today. It was a good visit and I was glad to have another set of eyes take a good look at it. He thought I was doing a good job.

Ready to move on with the wings.

I got a note back from the EAA chapter Tech Counselor and he is going to come by next Wednesday. He was unable to make the earlier date I had posted.

It looks like Tango will be ready to go by tomorrow. I will give it a go on Friday and check out all the paperwork again. If all is in order, I will reschedule my checkride for next week if I can.

I have a couple of hours of work I will do on the plane before next Wednesday.

I'm posting a day earlier than I thought I would, because I'm not going to have my checkride tomorrow!

I have been studying and flying, some family stuff too, but not building. That was the plan and I did my part. However, I plumb ran out of planes!

I did my practice checkride and oral as scheduled. After that I was ready to really put the polish on just a couple rougher spots. The very next day after my practice, I came in to fly but my plane was still out.

I reviewed my practice checkride and oral with my instructor and then when I mentioned that 64 November wasn't back yet, he let me know that it probably wasn't going to be back before my real checkride.

A student had taken it - right after I finished flying it the day before - and went on a solo cross-country. When he landed at an airport in northern Wisconsin, he porpoised and hit the prop on the runway! The plane is still down as I write this and will be for some time.

I have almost all of my hours in that plane, it was in perfect condition and now I can't fly it. I don't like to fly X-ray. I hadn't flown Tango or Yankee in many months so I wasn't sure what to do.

I still had nine days to go so I picked Tango and decided I would fly it. It handled well but had a few minor quirks that I adjusted to real quick. I squawked a couple of things and was assured they would be fixed in time. I also planned on flying one day with Adam just to review a few things.

As it turned out, Adam had a death in his family and had to fly back home so I didn't get to fly with him, but I worked on the issues in a solo flight that went very well.

Last Friday, I was feeling very confidant and had all the airplane logs ready for review. Today I came in to check out the airplane and take one more polishing flight but what do I see, the aircraft is in the hangar with the cowl off.

It had been flown over the long weekend by a bunch of people and somewhere in there, either the magnetos had failed or shorted out!

The best that could be said was, maybe it would be ready in time for tomorrow.

At that point I flew Yankee just to give the mechanic a little more time to trouble shoot. When I got back there was still no definite answer so I decided to reschedule.

I called the FAA examiner and let her know and we will reschedule after I know what plane I will be flying!

I also talked with the mechanic about my issues with X-ray. I've decided to take X-ray up tomorrow and define my trim issue for him. If we can get that issue taken care of I will be fine with X-ray.

I am very disappointed as I was completely prepared and ready. I was also ready to move on but it looks like it will be another week or two until I will try again.

In the meantime I have decided not to start building again. I want to move on without the distraction of the checkride. I will fly some more this week and take care of some other delayed tasks and then get myself primed again for the checkride.

So, no building pictures for awhile yet.
