Building Sonex 982 Sierra X-ray

Bob Meyers' Unofficial Airplane Builders Log

I may post some pictures in a few weeks from Oshkosh but here is a link to some pictures I took of the Dreamlifter taking off.

Dreamlifter Takeoff Sequence

What is the Dreamlifter? Are you kidding me? You don't know???

Take a 747 and make it bigger. It is used to haul sections of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner from around the world to Everett, Washington for assembly.

...just very little building. I may do some tomorrow but that will be the last for at least a week.

Since the last post it has been a whirlwind of flying and other activities including, a baseball game, some building, several visits to the airplane factory - including one from a Lufthansa 747 Captain from Germany - and making plans for Oshkosh.

I was going to build today and I got a full day in, just not on my plane! I helped Chris Williams out with his plane because of a last minute crisis. I will write later and let Chris have an opportunity to tell his story first. He should be in Oshkosh by now with his Sonex.

I will be going to Oshkosh this week for a couple of days. After that I have a full schedule until next Tuesday. There won't be another post until at least the second weekend in August.

Take care, fly safe if you fly, and happy building if you build.

I have been working on two sections that each have several pieces of angle to make. I have most of the pieces finished including an assembly.

Here are the pictures. Text may be added later tonight, soon if not tonight.

I did fly today but I managed to get a little further along.

No new pictures yet but I did update yesterdays pictures with text.

I have two days of mostly building ahead.

Looks like the same this week too.

Here are the lastest pictures without text descriptions yet.

Thanks to Chris Williams and his Sonex #732 I spent almost three hours in the air in a Sonex this past Weekend. Chris did all the takeoffs and landings and I got a good amount of stick time in the air on all or our legs.

It was great fun and was very much what I expected. It was a tight fit with the two of us and we had to leave off a couple of gallons to stay under max gross but it was not too uncomfortable.

Here is a rare picture in this mostly text-only blog! I'm the pilot flying.

Today I marked up and cut out the glare shield as well as made all the detail pieces to attach it and the instrument panel as I got back to building.

More building tomorrow but then a couple of days of flying.

And I got to try my hands at the controls. I am flying again tomorrow. I will have a full report with some pictures afterwards.

I finished the seat pan today and got to sit in the airplane for the first time.

I have made up the next Sonexlog and posted the pictures here.

The text will be added later so it's just pictures for now.
